The Story

Biography

A strongly-built ruckman-forward, Mark Amos wore guernsey number 38 for Carlton in a brief senior career that began in the Premiership season of 1970 and lasted precisely one year. Originally from Robinvale in northern Victoria, Mark had been playing for Montmorency in the Diamond Valley Football League when the Blues recruited him for their Under-19 squad in 1969.

Amos won promotion to the Reserves team later that same year, and represented the VFL Seconds in an interstate match. Early in the following season, he continued to progress when he was named for his senior debut as 19th man against Hawthorn at Princes Park in round 7, 1970. In the first of his four games for the year, Mark sat on the bench until the last quarter and had little impact, as the Blues were demolished by 32 points.

Remarkably, all of Amos’s games in navy blue were decided by big margins, with his five losses at an average of 46 points, and his only win achieved by a whopping 85 points over Melbourne in round 11, 1970. That victory, and his award as Reserves Best and Fairest in 1970 were the highlights of his career at Princes Park.

Mark’s career in navy blue ended the same way as it had started – in a big loss to visitors Hawthorn at Princes Park in round 7, 1971. At the end of that season, Amos crossed to Fitzroy, where he played his seventh and last VFL game against Carlton at Waverley on June 24, 1972.
