The Story

Biography

Carlton signed former US College basketballer Matt Owies who as a Category B rookie for the 2019 season. The Blues had some competition from Geelong for his signature but it was the Blues who won out in the end.

Owies who originally was an inside midfielder for St Kevins college pursued his passion at the time in basketball. The talented junior footballer decided to travel to the USA in 2016 after he secured a four-year athletic scholarship at the University of Hawaii. During his stint he played a total of 27 games averaging 11.6 minutes off the bench, he then made a move over to the mainland last May to line up with Seattle University. Part of his motivation to return to Australia to take up footy may have been that he was red-shirted throughout the entirety of the 2017/18 college season e.g. stay on the playing list but not participate.

Matt Owies played with Camberwell Sharks, St Kevins and later with the TAC Cup Team Sandringham Dragons.

Matthew Owies would be selected to make his debut in the Round 16, 2020 clash with the Sydney Swans at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, he was named on the interchange bench. The Blues would get home in a come from behind thriller to overrun the Swans.

Over 5 years at the Blues Owies would find a slot in the pocket, with 89 goals in 72 games. As list spots tightened, he found himself - and one of our favourites traded to West Coast for SEason 2025.

Carlton are interested in adding the highly-rated young Australian basketball player Matthew Owies to their list for 2019, and are poised to take him as a category B rookie selection in this year’s AFL draft.Melbourne-born Owies recently moved back to Australia after living in the United States since 2016, playing college basketball with the University of Hawaii and most recently Seattle University. It is also understood that Geelong have registered their interest in Owies, who showed promise as a footballer in his younger years. Standing at 185cm tall, Owies played APS school football at St Kevins College until year nine - mostly as a midfielder and a part-time forward – before he switched his focus to basketball. The point guard has also represented Australia at junior level, including at youth world championships. He won a silver medal with Australia at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships in Dubai, and was vice-captain of that team.
