Stephenson was born in Dunolly, and played at Dunolly, then Maryborough from where he was recruited from. Some years later, Jack's son John would try out for the Blues, managing to play a single game for Carlton.

The Age March 2 1937 (p12) mentions former Carlton player Jack Stephenson coaching the Malvern Amateurs again, this year.
