Game Review

This match had a huge build up, as it was to be, among other things, the first feature match at the MCG since the completion of the Great Southern Stand. It was also billed as 'The Centenary Match' as part of Collingwood's 100-year celebrations, and was played on a Thursday to mark a year to the day since the old foes had first played each other in the VFA.

What made Carlton's win even more admirable was that we had played Footscray on the Sunday before - so we only had a four-day break between games.
Kernahan was brilliant again - kicking 7, including an ever-so-tight set shot from in front of the new stand, at the Ponsford end. Diesel Williams, in his second game for the Blues, just got better and better, showing his foot passing was just as accurate as his handball in racking up 22 kicks, 12 marks and 11 handballs. He was ably supported by Craig Bradley, with 21 kicks and 9 handballs.

Despite the efforts of the usual suspects the night belonged to Andrew Cavedon. Perhaps Cavedon will be most remembered for his outstanding game in this Centenary match against Collingwood in Round 8, 1992 where he took 9 marks and gathered 24 disposals roaming around the ground to help the Blues spoil the Magpies party.

Not even Tony Shaw rearranging Ron De Iulio's nose could stop Carlton from again gatecrashing the Pies' party. The sport headline of the Herald Sun the following day was 'BLUE BLITZ'….

This game is remembered fondly by Carlton fans, and is considered one of our best wins in the Home & Away rounds of the 1990's.
