Game Review

In the first year of significant national expansion, the then VFL introduced West Coast and Brisbane into the competition. West Coast were an unknown quantity but had a fearsome reputation forged through some exceptional State of Origin games in the mid 1980s.

An 8 goal opening quarter, highlighted by 4 goals to Wayne Johnston and 3 to Kernahan, blew Carlton out to an early lead, and a 10 goal final quarter in front of a fanatical home crowd at Princes Park propelled the Blues to an 87 point win.

As a side note, Jamie Dunlop and Laurie Keene will no doubt cringe when they contemplate their vicious attack on each other (not). This is after the "ferocious" open-handed slaps they gave each other!

This game is remembered fondly by Carlton fans, and is considered one of our best wins in the Home & Away rounds of the 1980's.

The Weagles had arrived at Princes Park full of confidence despite succesive losses to the Swans and Essendon. By 5pm that day, what was left of those vanished ego's had vanished into the football mist that descended upon Royal Parade. It had been a debacle that afternoon. The locals had turned it on for the partisan crowd, with messrs Johnston, Meldrum, Madden, Dean (I could go on) leading the charge. The Eagles appeared shell-shocked from the intial onslaught and any chance of a recovery appeared remote. With the exception of a third quarter revival, the Blues always had the game in their clutches. They had been served well by many, but young WA discard Richard Dennis took my eye. His performance must have added salt to the Eagles wounds. It certainly didn't help coach Ron Alexander's cause who didn't seem to take the defeat too well at all. So while the Eagles lament over a season that promised so much yet so far has produced so little, let's take a look at that Carlton side which the experts were writing off just a fortnight ago. The Blues meet Essendon at Waverley's Thunder-dome next week and if I remember rightly they recorded one of their best win's for the season against the same side in '86. Sheedy's going to get his right whack - Carl Toner Inside Football.

Carlton again demonstrated its attacking power with an 87 point blitz over the West Coast Eagles on Saturday last. The addition of the high-marking Peter Sartori and Richard Dennis has helped to take much of the pressure off Kernahan and Silvagni. With Johnston (7 goals) back in form, and the ever-dangerous Fraser Murphy around the goal mouth, the Blues forwards are now starting to deliver the goods. - Footy Week

Johnston dominant
Former Carlton Captain Wayne Johnston was the driving force behind Carlton's big win. Johnston kicked seven goals and four behinds from his 19 kicks. The current Captain, Steve Kernahan, was the other main scorer for the Blues with six goals from six shots. Craig Bradley with 26 disposals (15 & 11) and David Glascott with 32 disposals (19 & 13) were the best disposalists for the Blues. - Footy Week.
