Game Review
This was the first battle between Ex-Fitzroy coach Robert Walls and ex-Carlton coach David Parkin, who had swapped places in the off-season.
Craig Bradley was a stand out on this day. His two goals were at the end of long runs through the midfield & left those at the ground asking each other "what have we got here?".
Dynamic Carlton centreman Craig Bradley has jumped to a two-vote lead in 'Inside Football' Player of the Year award. Of all the Carlton recruits of 1986, Bradley appears to have settled the quickest. Those fortunate enough to have witnessed his performances for Carlton so far will appreciate the fact that Bradley is an exceptionally quick, talented and heady footballer. A regular South Australian representative in state matches, the former Port Adelaide footballer is relishing the mid-field role. His showing against Fitzroy indicated that he will be a tough customer for rival clubs to overcome this season. Other Blues to star in the win over the Lions, was lanky ruckman Justin Madden and the versatile Paul Meldrum. - Inside Football.
Watching Carlton's Mark Maclure and Wayne Johnston against Fitzroy was like winding back the clock. Both played like youngsters and this surely must be a good sign for the Blues. Both players have struggled because of injuries in recent seasons, but on Saturday showed that they are back to their best. Maclure always has been one of the unsung heroes of modern football, always putting his body into the action and doing all the hard work that often goes unnoticed. On Saturday he took several spectacular marks, and incredibly, looked faster than he has for years. Johnston has had nothing but bad luck in recent seasons and must have been bitterly disappointed at losing the captaincy this season. However, Johnston is not the type to spit the dummy and his fine form will be a tremendous boost to the Blues. - Jim Main Inside Football.
