Whether it was the interest in debutant Ron Barassi or not, a Glenferrie attendance record of approximately 36,000 would attend this game. The Barassi era would begin strongly with a 37 point victory, almost identical to the opening quarter margin where the Hawks were kept scoreless.

Carlton burst into the limelight with a resounding victory over Hawthorn at the Glenferrie Oval, to take top place on the ladder. Glenferrie is a test for any side, the Blues won by matching the robust Hawks in physical strength and outpointing them in teamwork.
