Game Review

St Kilda rubbed salt into Carlton's wounds by kicking six goals to nil in the last quarter of this fiery game at the Junction Oval, and ran out very easy winners. Two Blues; Berkley Cox and Gordon Collis, were reported for striking. The exoneration of Collis would prove highly significant later in the year, when Gordon capped off an individually brilliant season by winning the 1964 Brownlow Medal. On the other hand, Cox had only returned to the side in round 4 after serving a suspension incurred in the 1963 night series. This time, he was found guilty of striking the fearsome Carl Ditterich, and outed for another four weeks. Clearly, Berkley was a man with no sense of self-preservation....

On this bleak day for the Blues, there was one ray of sunshine - the debut game of champion rover Adrian Gallagher.

"Carlton Football Club officials intend to "report" a boundary umpire for "intimidating" a Carlton player in the second quarter of the match against St.Kilda on Saturday.
They will take action against boundary umpire Marsh at a meeting of the Victorian Football League on Wednesday night. Three players were reported during the Carlton-St.Kilda game, two of them by Marsh.
Berkley Cox and Gordon Collis, of Carlton, as well as St.Kilda ruckman Alan Morrow were all reported on striking charges.
We resent umpire Marsh's attitude towards our players, and to our way of thinking we are being victimised by him, Carlton president Mr. Lew Holmes, said last night.
Cox was suspended for four games on a report made by umpire Marsh after a match in the night series last year. Everyone in our rooms was shocked at half time when told by Cox, 'Well, he got me again.'
We intend to instruct our delegates to the League to take up the matter and find out if there is any resentment against Cox by Marsh, Mr. Holmes added."
