Game Review
This match ended amid controversy and anger from Fitzroy, who were beaten by a single point in a grandstand finish. With only seconds left to play, scores were level when field umpire Harold Hodgson bounced the ball in Carlton's forward pocket. The ball spilled off a huge pack, and the siren blared just as Carlton rover Martin Cross punched the ball through the goals for a rushed behind to win the game. Every Fitzroy player in the vicinity claimed that the siren had sounded before Cross touched the ball, but Hogson disagreed and the score stood. While they may have been unlucky, the Maroons only had themselves to blame. They had four more scoring shots than the Blues, and failed to capitalise.
Possibly the best player for Carlton was Wes Lofts on the half back-flank. John Nicholls was tireless and effective as usual, while Murray Kick was fast and creative on the wing. John Benetti was a solid defender in the back pocket, while Maurie Sankey rucked well and was a valuable forward. Best of the others was Bruce Williams. - Football Record.
