Game Review
Richmond inflicted a mortal blow on Carlton’s finals hopes when they recovered from a mid-season slump to thrash the Blues by six goals in this pivotal match at Punt Road.
Seven weeks into the season, Richmond had been sitting on top of the ladder, having lost only one game. They then fell into a deep trough and were beaten in six matches on the trot. By the time they hosted Carlton on the first Saturday in August, they had plummeted to eighth place on the ladder, and their season was in ruins. But against a hated, traditional rival, the Tigers rediscovered their mojo, and never let the Blues gather stride. In front at every change, they were too cohesive in defence and too aggressive in the ruck for the Blues, who came away with their dreams of playing in the finals well and truly shredded.
This heavy loss dropped the Blues to eighth, ten points - and a gulf of class - behind the top four of Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon and Fitzroy.
It was time to start planning for next season.
