Game Review

The barnstorming Blues shaved a point or two off their Premiership odds when they easily accounted for Collingwood in the wet at Victoria Park. Carlton followers Jim Flynn and ‘Pompey’ Elliott relished the heavy going, and constantly drove the Blues forward from the crushes. Both were outstanding in an important victory by 20 points. In fact, the wet weather in this round produced a couple of real upsets. Lowly Melbourne beat South Melbourne at the MCG, and previously winless St Kilda kept Essendon to a miserable 1.7 (13) at the Junction Oval. The Saints kicked 6.8 (44) to win by 33 points.

After four rounds, Carlton was now alone at the top of the ladder, unbeaten and with an extraordinary percentage of 202.34. Fitzroy (3 wins) South Melbourne (3 wins) and Collingwood (2 wins) made up the top four.

'Centre' in Melbourne Punch waxes eloquent over 'Pompey' Elliott's play against Collingwood in their 20 point victory; The gong found him still going strong, and he returned to his corner covered with mud and glory - while a cab waited outside, loaded with peanuts, cork screws, ginger ale and Victoria Park crosses.... - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 202.3.
