Game Review

Monday's Age (p9) said;
"Carlton, who were without Morrison and Casey, because they arrived too late ....."
Argus; "Carlton had Morrison, Casey and Cowell away, ....."

"There was a fair number of spectators." (Herald August 26)
Carlton kicked to the railway end of the ground, Pat Considine had a shot from and angle which hit the post, Bob Bird scored the first goal with Harry Thompson kicking the Blues' second.
In the second quarter Harry Thompson kicked his second goal followed by Bobby Walsh scoring Carlton's fourth.

Without doubt, this was the Blues' best performance of a pretty sorry season. Up against the mighty Maroons, premiers of 1898 and on the way to the double, Carlton fought every inch of the way, and failed by a single point to inflict a massive blow to the men from the other side of Nicholson St.

After suffering the expected belting at Princes Park when the sides clashed the previous Saturday, the Blues took it right up to the hot favourites and came within an ace of a miraculous victory.

"Fitzroy's best friends will readily admit that in the first half Carlton's hand play and concerted work were surprisingly good, and that, and notwithstanding the home team's fine recovery in the third quarter, there was quite as little in this match as the closeness of the totals indicates.
The finishing bout was intensely exciting. Ten minutes before time the scores were equal; and even after Fitzroy had secured the point that placed their heads in front, Carlton would have pulled the match off, or, at any rate, made it a draw, had not their marksman, Bird, failed utterly with a moderately easy chance. It is undoubted that under the circumstances the jingle of the final bell made very welcome music for Fitzroy, who had every reason to be thankful for their win." (Australasian September 02 p22)
