---------Carlton board member George Varlamos resigned yesterday from his post after his decision not to support president John Elliott.
Varlamos, who had been on the board for 13 years, abstained from the board vote on August 20 that backed Elliott nine to one.
Former Blues' star Ken Hunter, the only director to vote against Elliott, resigned immediately afterwards.
Varlamos issued a statement yesterday saying he had not resigned on the night of the board meeting because he wanted to work with other directors to solve the presidency issue.
"At the time, I believed this was possible - however, ongoing discussions with my fellow Carlton directors . . . made it clear that I do not have majority support to achieve this objective," Varlamos said.
Varlamos also paid tribute to Elliott and said he would not join any potential ticket against the board. But he stood by his belief it was time for a new president.
"The fact that a thousand or so members have signed a petition calling for an extraordinary general meeting to remove the board should serve as a sobering wake-up call," Varlamos said.
