Match Review

North Melbourne-Werribee made an ominous start to its rebel VFLW title defence with a dominant 48-point win over Carlton in their season opener at Arden Street Oval on Good Friday. Carlton ruck recruit Grace Matser kicked the first goal of the season in the seventh minute but the reigning premiers – boasting a new name after an off-season alignment with VFL flag-winners Werribee – gradually took control and eased away to a comfortable victory. The Kangaroos kept the Blues scoreless from Matser’s goal until Sophie McCarthy hit the target at the same stage of the third, but that only sparked them into action and they kicked six more goals after that – including three to Lisa Hardeman medallist Nyakoat Dojiok – to bank the biggest win of the opening round. They were +68 in disposals and +25 for inside-50s as they conceded just 22 opportunities to Carlton, with Big V representatives Tessa Boyd, Maddie Di Cosmo and Alana Barba leading the way underneath Kate Reynolds (31 hitouts), while Renee Tierney (two) joined Dojiok as multiple goalkickers. Star defensive recruit Nadia von Bertouch did her best to keep the Blues in the contest with eight rebounds, with Octavia Di Donato showing the benefits of her AFLW stint at West Coast between seasons, Brooke Vickers laying 10 tackles and Amy Trindade also performing strongly. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Match Review

Carlton bounced back from a big loss in Round 1 to comfortably beat Geelong by 19 points at Deakin University. With Lucy Burke slamming through three first-half goals, the Blues blew the Cats off the park with six goals to none to safely bank the four points. The home team fought back strongly in the second half with four majors to one to put some respectability on the scoreboard. Carlton controlled possession (276-187) and more than doubled Geelong’s mark tally (70-28) in a terrific half of footy. AFLW-listed stars Brooke Vickers (27 disposals, 12 contested, eight marks, eight tackles, one goal), Amy Trindade (30 disposals, eight marks), Octavia Di Donato (25 disposals, 10 tackles) and Lila Keck (19 disposals, two goals) did as they pleased. But the young Cats didn’t give up, with Abby Favell and Zoe Cowan laying 10 tackles each and Mekah Morrissy nine, while Chloe Bryant had 10 contested possessions, Hayley Peck won 20 hitouts and kicked a goal and Jemima Woods looked dangerous in attack with 1.2. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Match Review

Sandringham joined Box Hill as one of two remaining undefeated teams after holding off Carlton by four points in a pressure-packed struggle at Ikon Park that yielded just four goals. The Zebras kicked the only goal of the first quarter through Chloe Saultry in the 11th minute, missing three more chances to build a big lead as the Blues hit back through Sophia McCarthy straight after the break, with the teams going to half-time at 11-7. Arianna Clarke broke a 23-minute deadlock five minutes into the third with a goal that was answered by Lucy Burke a minute later, but the defences then totally locked down with only one more behind scored by each team for the last 34 minutes of play. Zoe Barbakos was fierce at ball and opponent for Sandringham, adding 11 tackles and seven clearances to 18 disposals, with Ella Friend picking up 12 contested possessions and using the ball at 92.9 per cent, Imogen Evans had eight clearances among 20 touches and Eleri Morris marshalled the defence well. Blues stars Octavia Di Donato (14 tackles, five marks) and Brooke Vickers (14 contested possessions, 11 tackles, eight clearances) ensured there was no easy possession for their opponents. Hannah Scott pulled in 10 marks, Lila Keck and Emma Horne won 11 contested balls each and Nadia von Bertouch controlled the backline with 19 touches and seven marks. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Match Review

Essendon moved back into the top six as a clear gap starts to open between the top seven and bottom five, cruising to a 27-point win over Carlton at Windy Hill. The Bombers only led by a point at quarter-time after Lucy Burke’s late major for the Blues but eased clear with two goals in each of the next three quarters to win convincingly. The back-to-back goals from Abbey McDonald and Jayda Richardson out of the half-time break put paid to any hope the visitors had. Carlton didn’t give up and didn’t ever let the Bombers get completely off the chain, actually winning disposals (+11), marks (+28), hitouts (+7), clearances (+8) and tackles (+16). AFLW talent Brooke Vickers (12 contested possessions, 10 tackles) led the way and found plenty of help from Hannah Scott, Amy Trindade (11 contested possessions, six clearances, five tackles), Steph Demeo, Amelia Velardo and Sophia McCarthy. But the Bombers were simply too efficient, with recruit Abbey McDonald again best afield with 22 possessions and two goals, while Layla Prince had the best of the ruck, pocket rocket Ava Jordan bobbed up with a couple of majors and Sarah Ford and El Chaston also proved prolific. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Monique DeMatteo recaptured her best form, booting three goals to lead Darebin to a second-consecutive win in a 30-point triumph over Carlton in the Pride Cup at IKON Park. The Falcons grabbed the initiative with two goals in the first quarter and didn’t look back, keeping the Blues goalless until Amy Trindade finally broke their duck four minutes into the last term. By that time Rohenna Young medallist DeMatteo had franked her match-winner against Collingwood from the week before with three majors and there was no stopping Darebin, with regular defender Lulu Beatty booting two of three late goals to seal a much-needed percentage-booster and keep touch with the top six. Beatty sent a message to the Carlton AFLW list managers who let her go at the end of last season with her two goals capping off a starring performance that included 23 disposals. Ange Gogos was again close to best afield with 28 touches (19 contested), 12 clearances and eight tackles, Alyssa Mifsud had 12 contested possessions, six clearances and seven inside 50s in another strong effort and DeMatteo finished it all off in style. Defender Nadia von Bertouch was named best for Carlton, with Octavia Di Donato starring the middle for 24 touches, seven clearances and nine tackles and Jorja Jackson (13 contested possessions, six clearances, six tackles) also doing plenty of heavy lifting, while Grace Matser had a good contest with Shannon Egan for 35 hitouts apiece. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Williamstown returned to the top half of the ladder courtesy of a 12-point victory over a persistent Carlton at IKON Park on Sunday. The Seagulls made a lightning fast start with Georgia Howes booting a goal after 12 seconds and they repeated the dose to start the second half when Teagan Brett nailed a goal inside 20 seconds of the restart. That major gave the Seagulls a 26-point buffer and despite it proving to be the Seagulls’ only score of the second half, they had done enough to bank the win and were able to hold off their hosts in the last 40 minutes. Ash Thorneycrof returned to haunt her old side, racking up 27 disposals, nine clearances and laying a whopping 13 tackles, while Coaches MVP leader Emily Eaves was again a strong presence with 20 touches and nine tackles. Hannah Scott and Octavia Di Donato combined for 44 disposals and 20 tackles for the Blues, who have now face a stern test to push for finals sitting three wins outside the top-six with a 1-5 record. - Rebel VFLW Review.

Blues go down to Falcons

Carlton were defeated by Darebin at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday. - By Isabella Chessler (La Trobe University).

The wind was a prominent factor in the Round 13 clash, with the Blues falling short to the Falcons, 2.3 (15) to 5.6 (36). There were multiple standout players from the Carlton side, with Hannah Scott producing a team-high 23 disposals and 19 kicks while Emily Elkington - who has recently returned from injury - had 21 disposals, 15 handballs and a game-high 18 tackles. AFLW-listed players Lou-Lou Field and Meg Robertson did not disappoint, gathering a combined 39 disposals, 25 kicks and 14 handballs between the pair. The wind was in Carlton's favour in the first term, kickstarting the game for them. The weather assisted them to maintain the ball within their forward 50 for the most part putting, immense pressure on Darebin. Lucy Burke put Carlton's first on the board, kicking the opening goal straight out of the ruck, putting the Blues in the lead 1.0 (6) to 0.0(0). Coming into the second term, the Blues aimed to use their speed throughout the ground. Throughout the day, the ball continuously got stuck on the far-right side of the ground leading into the wind, proving difficult for both sides with continuous stoppages at this point. Defensive efforts from the away side led to 18 tackles for the quarter, with eight of them inside the Falcons' 50, but despite these efforts, the Falcons led 1.0 (6) to 2.1 (13) at the half-time break. Coming into the second half with the wind, Carlton had the advantage. Throughout the quarter, the team generated four scoring shots with AFLW-listed player Mia Austin kicking a goal on the run. With the Blues maintaining the ball within their scoring end, they hit the front 2.3 (15) to 2.2 (14) as the Falcons followed closely behind. Coming into the last term, the Blues knew it would be a challenging quarter as they played against the wind. Darebin capitalised heavily in the final quarter, generating seven scoring shots to take away a 21-point win. It was a highly competitive game from both sides, but the fourth-quarter efforts from the home team ultimately secured their win.

Leading Disposals: Hannah Scott 23, Emily Elkington 21, Lou-Lou Field 20, Meg Robertson 19, Siofra O'Connell 14.

Match Review

Hawks go into finals on winners list. Box Hill returned to the winners’ list to conclude the 2025 home and away campaign, defeating Carlton by 29 points at IKON Park on Friday night. It took a while for the Hawks to get going but they managed to be on level pecking with the Blues at half time despite being goalless. The visitors kicked their first in the opening minute of the third term via AFL-listed youngster Sophie Butterworth and registered 10 of the final 11 scoring shots to win their ninth match of the season and end the regular campaign in third position for a second-straight year. Rosie Dillon produced a standout performance to help Box Hill get over the line, finishing with a season-high 27 disposals along with five tackles. Tess Cattle and Matilda van Berkel were others to impress for the Hawks. Carlton AFLW midfielder Meg Robertson showed her class in her third VFLW game of the season, amassing a whopping 39 disposals, nine marks and five tackles in a sensational individual effort.

Leading Disposals: Meg Robertson 39, Amy Trindade 22, Hannah Scott 19, Emily Elkington 15, Emma Horne 15.
